Michael Stipe zenekara kétségkívül az egyik legnagyobb hatású alternatív rockzenekar, akinek a nyolcvanas években sorra jelentek meg jobbnál jobb lemezeik, rajtuk olyan slágerekkel, mint a Man on the Moon, az Everybody Hurts vagy a Shiny Happy People. A kilencvenes évek vége és Bill Berry, az R.E.M. dobosának távozása után azonban már nem tudták a régi színvonalat nyújtani, lemezeik egyre inkább ellaposodtak, és bár a 2004-es Around the Sun sok szép, lassú szerzeményt tartalmazott, mégis hiányzott róla valami. Ez a valami pedig a régi R.E.M., és az olyan lendületes slágerek, mint It's the End of the World as We Know It. Az új lemezüknek a címe gyorsulást ígér, visszatérést a régi R.E.M.-hez. A lemez szinte berobban a kezdő Living Well Is the Best Revenge című dallal, az ezt követő számok szintén hasonlóan gyors, igazi R.E.M. slágerek, melyek akár a Monsterre vagy a Documentre is felkerülhettek volna annak idején. Nem is lassul le sokszor a zene, csupán pár pillanatra a Hollow Man elején, majd az akusztikus, erősen politikai színezetű Houston alatt. Ezután pedig Accelerate, a kitűnő címadó dal, amit pár lassabb és sötétebb szám követ, mint az Until the Day Is Done vagy a Sing for the Submarine, a lemez leghosszabb száma, szövegében régebbi R.E.M. dalok címével. A lemez végén ismét két gyors darabot hallunk, a Horse to Watert és az I'm Gonna DJ-t, ami még előző lemezükre, az Around the Sun-ra készült, de végül nem került fel rá. Az egész album mindössze 35 perces, tehát a majdnem egy órás Around the Sun-hoz képest jelentősen lerövidült. Az Accelerate tökéletes visszatérés a zenekar gyökereihez, akit pedig nem győztek meg, nézze meg őket élőben, ugyanis nemsokára Magyarországon is fellépnek, a Szigeten.
